Например, если цена акции компании на бирже составляет Ј10, а прибыль - Ј1 на акцию, то соотношение P/E составляет 10:1. Иными словами, такой компании потребуется 10 лет, чтобы заработать капитал, эквивалентный ее рыночной стоимости. Высокий коэффициент Р/Е свидетельствует о возможных перспективах роста компании и об относительной надежности инвестиций в ее акции. Он является одним из основных показателей, используемых биржевыми аналитиками для определения того, являются ли акции компании дешевыми или дорогими относительно рыночных цен. Коэффициент Р/Е также называется «multiple of a company» (кратное число) и является зеркальным отражением другого показателя - отношения прибыли к цене акции (см. Earnings yield).
